We might have to say goodbye to the dog, the iron AND the boot…

Hasbro Inc has announced this week that it will be changing its board game forever, replacing the player pieces we all know and love.

As from August, your Monopoly game might be missing your favourite token, whether it’s the boot, the top hat, the iron or even the dog.

The company announced that it was finally time for new player pieces, explaining that they would be leaving it up to the public to decide the eight new tokens with an online vote.

The Monopoly token vote has already begun, running from now until January 31st, giving fans across the globe the opportunity to choose from a list of over 50 contenders and select the next pieces. And forget the old silver design - the new tokens will all be golden.

The list of contenders to choose from ranges from old classics to brand new additions, everything from a jet ski, a hashtag and a mobile phone to a bunny slipper, sliced bread and a penguin.

Emojis also seem to have infiltrated the 1935 board game, with five different emoticons on the list: the wink face, the thumbs up, the smiley face, the kissy face and the crying with laughter face.

After the votes have been counted and verified, the eight fan-selected tokens will be sent to production, ready to hit shelves in the updated Monopoly board game this August.

‘The Monopoly Token Madness Vote lets our passionate fans choose all eight tokens in the Monopoly game and no token – not even the Scottie dog - is safe!’ explained Craig Wilkins, Marketing Director for Hasbro Gaming. ‘Only time will tell if fans will decide to stay with the current tokens, keep a few favourites or pick an entirely new line up of tokens.’

As an experiment we did a straw poll at MC HQ to see which Monopoly piece each person would select and the results are pretty hilarious. These are the five most popular pieces on the list of over 50…

1. Dog 2. Top hat 3. Iron 4. Boot 5. The wheelbarrow

It looks like we’re fans of the old board – in fact we still haven’t got over the last change from Monopoly cash money to credit cards.

Take part in the Monopoly token vote before January 31st to determine the next eight.
