Sarah Jessica Parker's new Sex and the City theory is amazing

This Sex and the City theory might just be the most bonkers yet

Here at Marie Claire, we all love a good fan theory, but we might just need a moment to recover from this latest Sex and the City theory from Sarah Jessica Parker.

A full twelve years after the hit HBO series finished, SJP just revealed on Chris Hardwick's American podcast Nerdist that she’s not sure whether Carrie’s three best friends were actually more of the imaginary variety. Which would mean that all of those amazing SATC quotes we've loved for years take on a whole new meaning...

‘I used to wonder if Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda were real,’ said the 51-year-old actress who played Carrie Bradshaw on the show for six seasons.

“That wasn’t just her column ... because they’re such perfectly archetypal characters. So you’re writing a column about sexual politics and observations of female/male, primarily, heterosexual relationships, so you’re picking one type.

‘You’re saying “this type is this and this,” and then you complicate it more, like any good writer does. So I’m not entirely sure they are actually real.’

But wait a second, we hear you say. If Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda aren’t real, how come Carrie (who supposedly is) is a part of their narrative?

Well SJP has an answer for that too: ‘She is among them because that's her way of infiltrating story and affecting story too, to have her own actions affect those friendships and document their response.’

Minds. Officially. Blown.

We would love to hear what Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall think about SJP essentially reducing their well-loved characters to nothing more than figments of Carrie’s imagination. Typical of self-centred Carrie perhaps?

One thing is for sure though – fans are not happy, with many of them taking to twitter to express their outrage/confusion/admiration (delete as appropriate) for Sarah Jessica Parker’s controversial theory.

 While we might not want to believe it, SJP has a reputation for highlighting truisms both on an off screen. Just switch on to HBO again and you’ll see how Sarah Jessica Parker’s new show Divorce gets it so right.

Either way, watching Sex and the City will never be the same again.
