Marilyn Monroe's subway scene in The Seven Year Itch is up there with the most iconic movie moments of all time, so it’s no surprise that the dress she wore is making history too.
The white halterneck dress, synonymous with the actress to this day, has been voted the most iconic screen outfit of all time.
Created by costumed designer William Trailla for the 1955 film, Marilyn famously teamed the floaty frock with a slick of bright red lipstick as she was caught by a gust of wind on the subway.
Marilyn’s dress topped the survey, commissioned by the British Heart Foundation, above Olivia Newton-John’s Grease leathers and Dorothy’s gingham dress from The Wizard of Oz.
The black Hubert de Givenchy cocktail dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s bagged a respectable fifth place on the list, placing under the bikini worn by Ursula Andress in Dr No.
Jessica Rabbit’s vampy red dress also made the top 10 movie moments, alongside the Baywatch’s red swimming costumes and Michael Jackson’s red leather Thriller getup.
Talking about the findings, fashion icon Hilary Alexander said: ‘The polls shows that the colour red is key when it comes to making an enduring style statement, whether it’s a flash of red lipstick or a scarlet evening gown.’
