Keira Knightley anorexia debate
Keira Knightley's mum has stepped in to defend her daughter after becoming fed up of persistent rumours that she is anorexic.
Sharman Macdonald likened the media coverage Keira has received to 'playground bullying', and has said her daughter simply inherited a slim physique from her father.
Rumours that The Edge of Love star was suffering with an eating disorder started circulating after Keira hit the red carpet in a gold halterneck dress looking super-skinny. But mum Sharman, a playwright, says that Keira actually had to eat a special diet high in carbs and protein to keep weight on, adding that she 'eats like a horse.'
She said: 'She has always been thin. She's her daddy's daughter, with his long body.'
She continued: 'It's a playground situation that we're looking at with the Press - it's a form of bullying - but what can we do?'
In 2006, Knightley denied rumours that she had an eating disorder.
She said: 'I've got a lot of experience with anorexia - my grandmother and great-grandmother suffered from it, and I had a lot of friends at school who suffered from it, so I know it's not something to be taken lightly and I don't.
'But I don't have it, I am very sure of that.'
And last year the Atonement star admitted to visiting her GP for advice on how to gain weight.
She said: 'I went to the doctor to be checked out and asked him what I could do to put on weight.
'He told me that, for someone of my body type to get to a size 12, I would have to eat a lot of s*** food, stop exercising and drink loads. Basically, my body type is naturally thin. There is nothing I can do about it.'

No wonder her weight fluctuates. I'd say movies and the associated press responsibilities are long days and hard work. For someone naturally athletic and lean, it's going to take a hell of a lot of eating to maintain the same weight at all times, let alone gain weight.
I wish they'd leave the poor girl alone. It's rude and insensitive. Some people can't seem to lose the last 5kg, others can't seem to gain it. Why is it that we only rubbish the latter category in the media? It reeks of jealousy. The GP said she can't help it, Keira says she can't help it, her mother says she can't help it... can we stop already?

I believe you Keira - naturally thin myself and binge eat, I probably have about 2500-3000 calories a day, my only exercise is a bit of housework and perhaps one 20 minute walk a week, yet I'm quite underweight too. I'm glad her mum fights her corner for her, it took my parents ages to realise that I'm naturally skinny like my brother, but because my brother is male, nobody ever accused him of having an eating disorder.

I agree the obsession with female celebrities' weight is a no-win situation - for the celeb and the consumer. I would just add that mothers do not always know what is going on in their daughters' lives - and it is a sad comment on society that a women who is very obviously underweight is a glamour icon - Keira Knightley has not made anyone anorexic - she is a symptom not a cause of our sick attitudes to appearance and especially to weight.

OMG can we just not leave the poor girl alone? If she actually put on any weight then she would get called 'fat' or they would be pregnancy rumours. If she is slim she gets told she MUST have anorexia and no one could be THAT slim. Not everyone is the same, everyone is different, some people actually are naturally thin, and some people are naturally buxom, big, tall, short whatever. No wonder these celebrities have problems. Just leave her alone, she’s slim, get over it and move on!
