Sienna Miller takes over Portman role

Marie Claire news: Sienna Miller Rex Features

Sienna Miller is set to play heroine Cathy in a movie version of Wuthering Heights after Natalie Portman mysteriously dropped out of the role.

Portman reportedly actively pursued the role of Cathy Earnshaw in the adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel. Director John Maybury - and the producers from Ecosse and Hanbury films - were so taken with her talent and enthusiasm, they handed her the role, as well as casting approval over who should play the leading man, Heathcliff.

Then, with little notice, she pulled out of the production.

Michael Fassbender - a fast-rising London-born actor whose portrayal of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands was being shown last night at the Cannes Film Festival- is lined up to play Heathcliff.

Portman is also in attendance at Cannes, and may have a a problem avoiding those involved in Wuthering Heights, as she's sitting on the main jury.

Please not Sienna Miller, Cathy was dark with brown eyes and she was only seventeen when she died in the book, it would be better if they picked an unknown actress.

I completely agree, Merle. Sienna would be terrible in this film. As would Kiera "plank of wood" Knightley. There's a reason why Sienna's known more for her relationships and partying than her acting... she's terrible! I've seen her in three films, in each one it’s the same sort of role. Maybe she could play Isabella, but not Cathy.

Great news. Anyone who has seen Sienna will know what talent she has. Also, have seen Michael Fassbender in a few things but wow was he gorgeous, apart from a very talented actor, in 300.

Its a shame Natalie Portman pulled out of this role as she would make the perfect Cathy, perhaps they should ask Miss Knightley to play the role instead.

The word "no" does not adequately convey the no-ness that is screaming forth from my heart...Sienna has nothing remotely Catherine in her...I see an iceberg ahead, better turn the wheel on this ship quickly!
