Low-key Golden Globes sees Atonement win

It may have lacked any of the usual Hollywood glamour we've come to expect from awards ceremonies, but Brit movie Atonement won the top honour of best film at this year's Golden Globe awards.

The movie which stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy came up trumps at a press conference in Los Angeles last night.

The opulent red carpet do was cancelled owing to the ongoing writers' strike and Hollywood remained a ghost town as A-list stars failed to appear in their designer frocks.

Instead the low-key event took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel where two US entertainment reporters read out the list of winners to an audience of around 600 people.

Other British winners included Daniel Day Lewis who won best actor, playing an oil tycoon in There Will Be Blood. The best actress Globe went to Julie Christie for her role as an Alzheimer's sufferer in Away From Her, whilst Samantha Morton and Ricky Gervais both walked away with TV gongs.

Johnny Depp's latest flick Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was picked for best musical or comedy and the actor himself won for best actor in a musical or comedy.

Best supporting actors awards were given to Cate Blanchett for her role of Bob Dylan in I'm Not there and Spain's Javier Bardem for his part in the Coen brothers' latest movie, No Country for Old Men.

Now it remains to be seen if the strikes are resolved and we can enjoy the glitz and glamour of Oscars night.

Its really sad that our actors did not get there night on the red carpet, as the award is for a particular film but in honesty its a way to show thank you for the talent that has got you this far and a encouragement for them to continue to get better and better over the future , I am sure the situation will be sorted by the Oscars if not then why bother having them in the future , i think at the end of the day it will be down to how many American Actors are going to get Oscars, But i am proud that the actors have stood by the writers after all they would all be nobody's without great writers .The writers are the most important part of any Film ,Play or Poem's The U K ,could have done with this kind of loyalty ,years ago then we would have unions to protect the poorly paid workers in all jobs .
