Actress Keira Knightley has spoken out about the world's obsession with her looks.

The 22-year-old star revealed she thinks the world's fascination with looks is tedious.

Speaking to the Radio Times Knightley said: 'Somebody goes, "Gosh, you're pretty." Thanks, I've got good genes! OK, I'm on the cover of a magazine but somebody else does the hair and the make-up, and airbrushes the f*** out of me.'

She added: 'It's not me, it's something other people have created.'

The Pirates of the Caribbean actress who is about to appear in the film adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel Atonement, also spoke out about the current celebrity-obsessed culture saying it was better to know nothing about stars' private lives.

'I think it ruins the magic. That's why I like watching films from 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago, because I don't want to know their life story.

'I want them to be characters on the screen. The magic is in the screen, not knowing what's behind it, because that ruins the magic.'

The actress also admitted that she believed the critics who said her acting in Bend it Like Beckham was bad.

'I completely agreed on every level. I didn't go to drama school, so I didn't get the training. It was difficult to get over that: "What am I doing? I'm pretending that I can do this and everybody's telling me I can't".'

On her upcoming role in Atonement, Knightly confessed: 'It's the first film I've done where I've actually felt any confidence whatsoever.'
