Ralph Lauren Catwalk Report S/S 2008
IF NEW YORK Fashion Week is to have a defining moment, it may have taken place on Saturday night. Celebrating 40 years in the business, Ralph Lauren hosted a lavish catwalk show that ended as he unveiled a curtain to reveal a candlelit party for 400 guests.
The hottest ticket in town, the 67-year old designer was supported by celebrity fans such as Robert De Niro and Sarah Jessica Parker, and also his designer peers, including Diane, Donna, Vera and Caroline.
Although the Central Park Conservatory made a sumptuous setting, the collection did not disappoint. Like a scene from My Fair Lady, models arrived wearing wide brimmed hats, and slim silhouette dresses, all in black and white. Lauren also played with androgynous looks, with female jockeys clad in jodhpurs, cravats, top hats and tails.
The show moved on in episodic fashion, as the equestrian theme gave way to an English country garden. A series of floor-length, flowing, floral gowns continued procedures, bursting with vibrant colour and pretty prints.
Lastly, Lauren showed exactly why he's earned so many celebrity fans. His gorgeous evening dresses will surely be seen across the red carpets in the coming awards season, as brightly coloured block taffeta gowns stood out for their beautiful cut and stunning simplicity.
As the procedures ended, Lauren appeared clad in a black tuxedo and took to the catwalk with Frank Sinatra's The Best is Yet to Come as his soundtrack. A fitting sentiment, and one that is easily believed.
